I have used Epocrates before with other Palm devices that I have used and have always found it to be a wonderful piece of medical software and very useful in my practice. You can imagine how pleased I was to find that it is now available for my Iphone. Epocrates is a medication database that allows you to look up drugs and identify their usages, their suggested dosages and their side effects. All of this is still included in this edition of Epocrates, however; I am happy to see that their is a pill identification area that allows the user to describe the pill in question, then the database will search to find a pill that is closest to the input information. I can’t tell you how many patients will put all of their pills for the day into one bottle to take around with them. Often when they are admitted they don’t know the name of the pill but they have the pill with them. We must then leave it up to the pharmacist to try and figure out what medication they are on by identifying the pill. Epocrates has now allowed the nurse to assist in the search for the pill and along with the help of the pharmacist can help in the identification process!
