Cloud Computing?

The idea behind cloud computing is hardly a new concept, but I think that regardless of expected success or failure, it is going to be making a real impact on things on all platforms. I am already seeing some indications that Windows 7 will likely begin the process of embracing cloud computing at some level, as with other platforms such as OS X and Linux.

With this in mind, I have a few suggestions for companies looking to make a successful go at entering this market. Considering the number of past and existing cloud computing options I have used in the past, I have come up with the following suggestions:

  • Stop using poor performing, terribly underpowered hardware. Using minimal RAM and VIA processors is not going to make any positive experiences. It’s great from the environmental aspect, but it really is terrible when you are seriously using the appliance as a daily use PC.
  • Provide a means of installing new applications. Obviously, restricting the applications that can be installed is something to be considered for new users. However being stuck with a limited application set serves only the new users.
  • Do no dismiss the requests and needs of your users. If you need to, be prepared to provide usable alternatives as your users will not be very forgiving with such a new technology.

So what do you think? What advice do you have for companies seeking to take the path of cloud computing?
