India’s $35 Laptop

Posted by on Aug 13, 2010 | 7 Comments

These days it seems like while the west is slow to get the latest, cheapest products out the door, India and other similar nations are able to produce what we might deem impossible: introducing what is being described as the $35 laptop. The problem is, this appears to be a tablet computer — not so much a laptop the way we know it. Regardless of what you prefer to call it, for $35, you can take this Android powered unit for a spin. Well, at least that is the claim to fame.

Speaking for myself, I am a bit wary as to whether we’ll ever see something like this in our neck of the woods. I mean, this strikes me as a tablet set for a target market in the east, not west. But I may be wrong on this and we may, indeed, end up seeing this come our way after all.

What do you think? Do you believe that we’ll end up seeing a tablet like this at a similar price point in our region of the world? Maybe, instead, there is a third option you have in mind that goes in an entirely new direction? Hit the comments; share your thoughts.

    :O $35?!?!?

If the $35 tablets are offered to the general public in the US at retail stores, they will sell like hotcakes. Most likely more demand than manufacture can supply.

    Absolutely, would sell great!

I would buy one. Even with its limits, it looks like a nice geek toy for me to play with and start conversations. Then, the grandkids will enjoy it for a few hours before they break it…

I suspect several hardware suppliers will move heaven and earth to prevent this kind of price erosion in their market segment. However I see a bright future for personal importing of educational devices at the same time.

Sign me up, I’ll take 5, (one for each person in my family)
Laptops are so over built and under utilized. This is a much better option. IP telephony w/ Skype or some other carrier, IM, Web, “Cloud Apps” … what more do we need?

I don’t need a tool for with the power to do video rendering in my possession all the time.

    This is perfect!
