Lumpy Chumby
Remember when Chumby was relevant? Heck, remember when anyone was still developing apps for it? This little touch screen device still sits in my home office to this day and often times serves as a tool for my dogs who really enjoy listening to Pandora throughout the day.
Despite my gripe about the lack of activity in apps worth using, I will give Chumby two thumbs up for up time and frequent updates. Considering the fact that it’s a one time purchase, this little tidbit is really appreciated. But this still leaves the matter of what the heck we are supposed to use the Chumby for? Mine serves almost exclusively as a radio. Others might watch news tidbits on this device. But considering the fact that it can indeed support video, why isn’t there more content for the Chumby then?
Netflix. Running on Roku, it provides me with just about everything I could want. And yes, while it’s true that a Chumby screen would be incredibly small to watch movies on, it would be nice to have this option. My Netflix queue on Chumby is just as lame as it was on the iPhone.
PodcastTV? Why hasn’t this device been harnessed to attract podcasters looking to share video content? Even better, make the show interactive with the abilities of the Chumby’s own touchscreen — say a review or contest at the end of each video podcast for instance? I can’t believe it would be this difficult to do considering what the Chumby provides out of the box. Sorry guys, but watching webcams of places I couldn’t care less about or clips of failing news networks is just not my bag. Maybe if Chumby got serious about building an app store where developers could earn a few bucks, we’d see some traction here?
