Google On Screen Keyboard

This is definitely one of those things that makes me wonder what Google is thinking. In this instance, we see that Google is looking to offer us access to an on screen keyboard.

The obvious question of course is “why?” How come now we see Google offering something like this? Just lucky timing? Perhaps, instead, there is a greater intent taking place here.

I think this is simply a matter of providing a keyboard alternative that is truly accessible. Besides, having an on screen keyboard can come in very handy. Whatever the real motivation might be, this is a great alternative to the out of the box options that come with most operating systems.

It might even be a test for the in-built keyboard for chromium os.

Sure makes lotsa sense, especially for non-Latin text, which is what it seems to be primarily designed for.

I’m an IT tech in Japan and sometimes you come across weird combinations of OS and keyboards where its more trouble trying to input Japanese to do a google than it is to fix the issue you are researching. This will definitely be something I’d use, if only they’d bring it to Japanese :(

(Also I know a few places that use touch screen terminals running Windows as POS machines – this would be much easier than having to find and use the built in Windows on-screen keyboard when you just want to download something)

Sounds like a great tool. A hidden userbase may be tablet users (who’s OS-based OSKs and handwriting input don’t always play nicely with browsers). I’m all for it, but it’s a shame it isn’t enabled by default in english too, I’d get some use out of it.
