Are You a Computer Science Major?

If you are a student studying (or planning to study) computers, are you focusing on one specific area of study? The job market is tough, even though there are computers everywhere. You can no longer get a general computing degree and expect to land a job making an insane amount of money.

You need to pick a specific area you are good at or interested in. Pour your focus into that area. Do you like to create things? Think about a career in development or programming. Networking is another in-demand area. There are SO MANY possibilities for geeks these days. But you honestly have to figure out exactly where you fit in. Labeling yourself as an “IT person” isn’t going to cut it anymore.

Becoming a developer is where it’s at right now as far as I’m concerned. The other areas won’t disappear any time soon, no. But look at all of the dev opportunities out there right now. A good programmer can make a killing — even with the economy in the pits.

Most important, love what you do. Figure out what area you’re passionate about. What sparks your interest and makes you want to continue to learn? That’s what you should go after. Don’t choose an area of study just because you think you’ll make good money. Sure, that’s an important consideration. You have to support yourself. But if you hate what you do, you’re not going to do it for long.

I have been working with Chris Pirillo and the LockerGnome team since August of 2007. I've done just about everything you can imagine: writing, community management, social media management, organizing Gnomedex, working with sponsors for the live stream/blog, and so much more. I have learned more than I ever realized I could and am forever grateful to Chris, the team, and the wonderful community we've built. At this time, I mostly handle all of the social media for Chris while also working full-time for a hot new startup as the Director of Social and Community -- building its online presence from the ground up. Life is never boring and never silent, but it's one hell of a ride every moment of every day. I wouldn't trade it for the world.
