Why Not To Buy An iPad
I came across this story earlier, and I really think it might have a point here. Seems that the author of the piece over at BoingBoing feels that the iPad is really not worth owning. Here are some of the reasons why.
By making things so easy, tinkering is simply not an option. Don’t get me wrong, I doubt that you will be doing much tinkering with an Android or Windows tablet either, but based on the options I have seen, the iPad is rather limited in comparison.
Here’s my thinking: USB ports. I have been told that the iPad doesn’t have USB ports. That right there is a huge limiting factor as far as I am concerned. No Flash. Again, choices being made for us as users, because Apple doesn’t like how poorly it does on its Macs, apparently. To be fair though, have heard that there will be a Hulu option for iPad users eventually. But still, no Flash is not very usable on today’s Web sites.
Personally, I think the iPad is significant, but not because of the Apple product itself. I think it is the App Store that makes it and the iPhone so compelling. The devices, themselves, are hardly impressive. The apps and the development ideas behind them are where the real success and magic is for the end user. And it is with this that I think we will see the iPad doing well despite cynicism from myself and others like me.
