Netbook Wakeup Call

I enjoyed reading this recent piece by Talking Digital. For the first time, I found an article that really hit the nail on the head with regard to Netbooks. Yes, they are definitely nothing even close to what we will find in notebooks. But there is something to be said about being able to pound out a quick article or post something to a blog without needing to lug around a full sized notebook computer.

I am more of a notebook guy myself, but I am finding that, more and more, having a simple Netbook on hand might be kind of nice for something small with tremendous battery life. No, the iPhone is NOT a substitute for a QWERTY keyboard in any universe. It’s great for checking email and using iPhone apps, but writing anything with it is painful.

No, I would say that in some situations, a Netbook could be just the ticket. Guess the key is finding one with an OS that is not feeling like it’s from 2001 or specs that are low enough to make me turn the Netbook into a mail server (Zonbu Mini).

    Hi Matt,

That article is dead on. There has been such a blur about notebook/netbook that people are confused. I agree with you that a light netbook could be a great tool in addition to a laptop. If you are going to the coffee shop for a little while you could bring your netbook and do some light surfing. Yet, if you are going to be going on a business trip and need Microsoft Office then you need your Laptop.

    Nice post.

I’ve got a fleet of them, most running Ubuntu variants. They’re great, quite usable, and never fail. I have one with XP with runs better than I thought it would.

Get as much ram as you can. Try out different sizes and keyboards – there are significant differences. Mine are mostly Asus 1000 series.

Acer has a 12″ that’s the nicest feeling netbook yet but XP is sluggish and it comes with a TON of crapware. Asus is going to 12″ models soon.
