eMachines – A Mac-Like Form Factor

At first pass, one might think that this $400 Mac-like form factor computer is a real steal. But once you look closer at the specs, you soon realize that this is basically a netbook with an external keyboard and mouse.

It’s true that at $400, the eMachines EZ1601 is cheaper than the competition. But a closer look at the specs provided show experienced shoppers almost immediately that this is not as powerful as most computers available today. An Atom CPU? Please.

No, I would say this is basically as compelling as a Zonbu with a flat screen. Obviously a bit more powerful, but considering the fact that it is boasting limited resources plus is not likely to be terribly upgrade friendly, one might want to consider all of the aspects of this computer before committing.

I realize that eMachines of the early 2000s compared to now are different. The old school models coming from the company were underpowered (PSUs), cheaply made, and were generally considered to be junk by anyone who knew anything about computers. Today, it seems like they are only providing slightly better products for a cut-rate price to people who are buying into the sleek new look. For my money, I say buyer beware. If eMachines disagrees, I would be willing to try out the EZ1601 on loan if it thinks it to be worthwhile. We’ll see what happens.

What Do You Think?
