Still No Chrome OS
So who didn’t see this one coming? No really, how long is this going to take? Considering the big hoopla surrounding Google’s announcement about the potentially upcoming Chrome OS, one has to wonder what the hold up is? I mean, it’s based on the Linux kernel and Google plans on using its own windowing system. So why is this taking forever? Simple: I don’t believe Google is in any hurry and therefore can take all the time it needs to get things down pat.
Oversimplified, I think not. Just looking at how Google enters new markets demonstrates that when it is deadly serious about something, it tends to take its sweet time. And let’s be honest, coming up with a “new operating system” is hardly a walk in the park.
What we do know is that it will basically be an operating system, likely targeting netbooks, which will use the existing Linux kernel. This is not to say that Google won’t customize the kernel a bit to better fit its needs, but most likely it will largely remain the default kernel we all know of.
It’s the applications. Honestly, considering how poorly gOS did in light of other distributions of Linux, I am unclear as to what Google is going to be able to accomplish. Outside of more money, an OS using its apps has already been out for a while and I have to say it’s “okay” at best. And keep in mind that I am a desktop Linux user myself, so I am speaking with Linux experience when I share my lack of enthusiasm.
Will Google take what was learned from gOS and avoid the same mistakes? Most likely yes. By targeting netbooks and sticking to a tight niche, Google might just be able to pull this off.

Well Google’s got there hands full you know. They have so many services to work with. It will probably be out in late 2010 is what I heard.
