A Glimpse Into The Abyss

This recent article on the mishap that was the story on movie piracy with 60 Minutes only goes to show, once again, how clueless the mainstream media really is about modern technology. Yes, movie piracy is stealing. No one with a clue is going to argue this. But where I have a problem is acting like the act of movie piracy through P2P networks is somehow going to hurt the movie industry. Give me a break.

From the same folks that tried to convince us that VCRs would be a downfall, the idea of P2P networks being anything short of a nuisance is a joke. Why? Consider this.

  1. Most people have no idea what BitTorrent even is, much less how to use it.
  2. Most people will wait to see the movie on DVD or in the theater, as box office hits and DVD sales have indicated.
  3. Is CBS merely acting as a mouthpiece for the ad-buying movie industry? One kind of has to wonder a bit.

Coming back to the concept of understanding, one must realize the overall scope of what is lost with those who choose to steal via P2P networks. Well, the fact of the matter is many of these people may have very well never intended to buy a ticket to see the movie or the DVD anyway. So clearly, outside of doing something sleazy, no harm was actually done in the monetary sense.

But as services like Hulu, Amazon OneBox, and iTunes have shown us, people are more than happy to purchase content. Just make it available in such a way as we might want to see it. In short, lose the crappy theaters. Don’t get me wrong: overpriced junk food, lousy seating, and loud people in the theater are awesome. But at the very least, present the content at the same time it is released in the theater. Who knows, you might actually find that while you might lose SOME of the theater goers, others may very well spend money early buying up the movies from the other formats available. Just saying.

Remember how Mike Wallace tiptoed around his buddy, liar and cheater Roger Clemens? I didn’t watch it, but am aware of the controversy. I haven’t seen an episode of 60 Minutes in at least twenty years. Is it still around? ;-)

On another note, the movie business is thriving. You can buy a ton of non-new-release DVD’s for 5 bucks each at the local Wal-Mart. Why pirate at all?

If the music industry ever starts selling downloads for a quarter or less, or CD’s for five bucks, maybe they’ll achieve the success of their movie counterparts. OTOH, I wish with all my heart that the MPAA and the RIAA would forever disappear.

Wired did an interview with Steven Soderbergh a few years back regarding this. I think releasing content on all formats at once makes sense. See http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/13.12/soderbergh.html.

The MPAA schills state information which is factually WRONG!!
This is the garbage that our senators and representatives are responding, and passing legislation based upon this inaccurate information.
