E-Mail:

Outlook Opens Up To The World

Seems like only yesterday I was using Windows, spending the better part of a day working to resize my Outlook .PST files before it became too unwieldy. Today, however, it looks like there is finally a light at the end of the tunnel with regard to Outlook data. While it took Outlook 2003 to bring some help with .PST file sizes, it is the news of the file format potentially opening up that will mean the most in the long run.

Think about it. Outlook .PST data files are seeing the same adoption in other mail applications as .Mbox! See, on my desktop, I can interchange my email backups in .Mbox format between Thunderbird to Evolution and back again. Yet if I were still using .PST, I would be stuck with one client, barring me using Thunderbird to convert the .PST to .Mbox format. Clearly not the ideal solution.

Now before getting too excited, there are a few things to consider.

  1. Nothing has been done with .PST yet. No dates set, the commitments made are rather open.
  2. Just because .PST opens up for other clients to use does not mean it will become the kind of standard that we have seen with .Mbox
  3. It is most likely that most .PST use will be with other apps on Windows. So Mac and Linux users, don’t get too excited.

What Do You Think?
