Security Options For Word 2007 Documents Part II

In Part I, I showed you how to set a password to modify a Word 2007 document. If you need to prevent users from viewing a document, you can also set a password to open a document.

You should only use this option when you want a few, specific individuals to read the document.

When you set a password to open, only those individuals who know the password can open the document.

The steps below outline how to assign a password in Word 2007:

  1. Click the Microsoft Office Button, point to Prepare and click Encrypt Document.
  2. Within the Encrypt Document dialog box, in the Password box, type a password.
  3. Click OK.

With a password now required to open the document, remember to provide the password to those users who need to read your document.

In addition, if you are working with other Microsoft Office file types, such as PowerPoint and Excel files, you can secure them in the same fashion as Word 2007 documents.
