Windows Rolls On With Marketing Buildup
Thus far, the build up for Windows 7 is not as mindbogglingly stupid as we found with Vista, but if this video is an indicator… Microsoft has not learned ANYTHING.
In case you are wondering, it took no time at all for the college humor types to get a hold of this and release a “bleep” filled parody that, sad as it is to say, had vastly more entertainment value than the original.
It’s funny because stuff like this is not only lacking in any of why I would ever care about attending a “party” surrounding an OS; they present it in such a boring, vanilla manner that I found myself unable to look away. It was like witnessing a car wreck. You know it’s going to suck, but still, you find yourself glued to the visuals, regardless!
Microsoft, please, please! concentrate on some pretty good features you have coming out. Much like the stupidity of Ubuntu release parties, this one is not going to make diddly difference to anyone outside of the tech industry. And I suspect that it was designed because it appealed to a room full of yes-men rather than the target market.
Despite being a Linux guy myself, it is commercials like this one below that do two very important things:
- Demonstrate something cool and creative with the product. And did I mention she does it without those “toothpaste commercial smiles” seen in the video above? She’s animated and having fun with the Windows 7 product!
- It’s short (even the original version is short), to the point and makes me want to check it out. Seriously, keep the stuff short and stick to reasons why someone might actually care.
I say again, the second video is fun and clever, while the painfully long, boring ad for some mindless party above it makes me want to go bury my head.

Beyond lame. Why don’t they just spend the $750 to make their own scent and hire cute models to spray it everywhere. And if that doesn’t fly ( I do not do people who hijack me with a scent, cute or not) Maybe i can deal with Windows scent if they put it on a lame buisness card that I could sniff and peruse later, maybe never. “I’m going to take a long, hot beauty bath to erase the stench of a five year marriage…” Those that know where that line came from can redeem their mega brownie points by e-mailing me directly.

I thought I got pretty far through, enough for a strong opinion, and then looked at the timer and I’d only been watching a minute. I was only able to give it another 20 seconds after that before stopping it and wishing you had uploaded the mentioned parody version along with it.
You’ve made your point well with little effor :P

The girl making video presentations didn’t show all the admin permission blocks she had to keep dealing with and now we all know which tech magazines and web sites that are willing to lie to us with bogus reviews at the drop of a money hat.

I won’t say anything about the first one, but I have a real problem with the second video. How old is the girl, 3 or 4? (based on how she can hardly say the word “responsive”) If she can copy and paste and put a slide show together with no apparent help, I’ll kiss your Windows logo.

OMG, i could not even watch the whole first video. I felt like holding my ears and running head first into a wall to stop the pain. These marketing people at Microsoft sure do need to be beat with a creativity stick. Or maybe if they just compose their commercials on a Mac it will help them be more entertaining and effective.

I think windows 7 Will be great, and people tend to misunderstand microsoft’s commercials, let’s not forget that close if not 100% of apple’s computer’s are based on driving users away from windows and stating that “THEIR” computers our better, when many people cannot afford a computer that price, and do not want a slower computer for that price either. My apologies if i make anyone upset, but that being said microsoft is very excited to bring a VERY successful windows that has been proven to perform better then any windows operating system we have seen yet. They have the right to celebrate, and no matter how many people don’t like microsoft, think their lame, or just generally dislike them, they will always be the world’s #1 Operating system, by retail use, as seen with windows XP.

The commercial with the excited little girl and her “sevens” is far better than the other commercial, which is just painful.
