Google Apps Paid, Tested, And Short-Sighted

Because of my scathing piece previously about how Google makes account recovery a shell game dependent on actually remembering a date in an era where we can barely remember what we had for breakfast, I opted to try out its business class services.
After spending about thirty minutes with it, I am going to go on record as saying that while it is cool to be able to tie in all of these cool features to one’s domains, it is lacking something fundamentally huge. Google Apps unpaid version migration.
Unless I can do the following, in no short order, I will cancel this with tremendous speed.
- Import my EXISTING Gmail account. Never wanted to use my own domain. Did this only with the understanding that this could be changed later on. It can… to another domain that I own. Unwanted, but I can see the point given the target audience.
- A common sense import function for Google Docs. Seriously, this is a no-brainer even for enterprise users!
It’s sad, as I never wanted to spend my day trying to import half of my life to a domain that I was merely using for testing. What about SoHo users who want the functionality, without the hassle of all of this importing? I am talking small businesses that might already be using a lot of services through Google. Clearly, I am either missing a grand ol’ import function or I will be ending my trial of this service very quickly.
Limiting this to users who are enterprise only is really dumb. Yes, in a slowing economy there is some economic sense here. Too bad, in the meantime, Google gives SoHo users already dedicated to its products and services such a raw deal.
I will keep the service running for a few days on the off chance there is a common sense means of integrating my two accounts. If there is not, I will be sending this thing the way of the dinosaurs.

You can import your existing Gmail account. You can even send and receive from that Gmail address in your Google Apps account. You cannot change domains though. Google Apps cannot be changed to another domain. You would need to setup Google Apps for your other domain separately. Surprisingly, most businesses keep the same domain name for the duration of their existence…
