Do All Verizon Mobile Phones Suck?

Network quality, while great when reaching for the mainstream, also translates into totally missing a target market of geeks and tech enthusiasts. About the only thing Verizon has going for its mobile offerings from a device standpoint are the BlackBerry options. Short of this, its phones are pretty lame.

As pointed out in this piece here, it is really quite clear that Verizon is limiting itself by only offering phones that “regular people” want. Sadly, what regular people want is evolving and, frankly, Verizon is not keeping up. For my money, the only Verizon device I would consider is one of the HTC options. While not as much fun as the iPhone, it is a strong enough device as backed up by the strong Verizon network that I would be able to make a switch to it fairly painlessly.

While it’s true that I would certainly be missing out on a lot of cool apps and other fun stuff only found on Android and the iPhone, at least I could own a smart phone from a company that is not pulling the ridiculous moves seen by Research In Motion lately. HTC has a history of sticking with what works. Be it not sexy, their phones work as advertised and that is saying something.

Perhaps you, and the many others that complain, should look up the word, ‘telephone’.

People who need things to impress others should go to Sprint, where using the phone is always secondary to being cool.

“at least I could own a smart phone from a company that is not pulling the ridiculous moves seen by Research In Motion lately.”

Good job backing this statement up with any facts.

Its not just the phones, its their plans for anyone geek, techie, or business person who needs access to all those features. Locking down phones for ringtones and other features? You want e-mail, internet, downloads? They really don’t offer any great plans at any decent prices. Even if they get the iPhone next year and other devices, unless they make their plans more competitive and less restrictive, they’re not going to get the business anyway.

Why are you writing about toy phones on the Lockergnome IT Professional newsletter? You should have saved this article for the Lockergnome Windows newsletter. As an IT Professional who manages over 350 cellular phones and data cards, the last thing any business needs is a phone that can be used for downloading “cool apps” or “other fun stuff”.

What I dislike about most phonescellular devices now a days is that they already have too many “cool apps” and “fun stuff”. Phones are Internet ready, and it’s too easy for an employee to sign up for NFL Now or download Facebook’s mobile app. If you ask me, cellular phones or smartphones should only have the very basic tools necessary for maintaining productivity.

Let me do something different by backing you up on this. I am in the same situation. Work uses Verizon and I wouldn’t switch because the coverage is excellent.

You have a choice between Crackberry and Windows Mobile, neither of which is acceptable to me. If you’re interested in a Pre (I’m not), it will be available Dec-Jan.

I’m even more difficult than you: I don’t like the iPhones or other Gee Whiz units either. If they would only upgrade my 700p Treo, I’d be happy.
