Vonage And Line2 For The App Store – Still No Google Voice

Apple is really playing hardball with Google Voice. Worse yet, the competition is getting their applications accepted without near the issues seen with Google vs Apple. What’s up with that? Here recently, we have Vonage with its application being accepted and, in addition, Line2 is included now.

What makes Line2 such an enigma is how it is so different from Google Voice yet, at the same time, manages to share enough similarities that it makes people such as me wonder how Apple is justifying forbidding Google Voice. Clearly, there are other voice applications in the app store that are also “redundant,” as Apple puts it.

Personally, I think it is a shame that we cannot seem to get past this. While I can fully understand Apple’s position, I am also thinking of the end users such as me who happen to own Apple products and want to use Google on these products. At this point, it is difficult to say for sure where things stand. I, for one, would like to see this issue resolved now rather than later.

My personal opinion is that if Apple wants to stop a competitor from putting applications on their App Store, they should be able to, without having to answer to anyone, including the FCC. But here is a link to the questions and answers.

Basically what they are saying is they haven’t approved it, because it changes the functionality of voice mail and messaging by routing them through Google instead of to the phone. We all know how Apple refuses to give up control of any of their stuff, so this is not a surprise.

We also know that Google collects tons of data on everything that goes through their sites and will give it up in a heartbeat to any federal agency that asks. I use Google and like some of their offerings, but I don’t think this is one I would want, anyway. If you do and don’t mind Google having all of your contacts in their databases, continue to put pressure on them and maybe they will be forced to relent. If not, and you want that feature, get and Android phone, and a different carrier, because I do agree with you that AT&T isn’t the best in show.
