Intel Asks: Are You Ready For Windows 7?

As Intel asks IT pros if they are ready for Windows 7, I might as well ask you the same thing. Are you ready for the upgrade? Many of you likely know by now that you will not be doing direct upgrades from XP as this is not in Microsoft’s playbook for whatever reason.
Then there is the question of legacy software. While there is going to be a compatibility layer available, there has been speculation that it might not be all that useful for all software situations. If this proves to be the case with select software, will you be upgrading those applications as well?
Perhaps instead you are fine with Vista or XP. Hey, most of the banks and businesses I have seen are not using Vista. Many of them are not even using XP — some of these places are financial institutions. So at the end of the day, something tells me Microsoft’s push with Windows 7 will need to be at consumers and SoHos. I say this as, honestly, I see most enterprise operations dragging their feet with making any sort of investment in making the upgrade. Am I wrong? Hit the comments and share your own Windows 7 story.

Since I have been using Windows XP Home (SP2) for some time now and feeling (finally) comfortable using it. I know that there must be progress to stay competitive/in business. But, why get rid of a system (OS) that is working?! I am just now(smerking quietly) figuring out how to use my XP Home and, now, I am to “upgrade” to Windows 7? Show me the $$$$$. I have been entertaining the idea of maybe switching to Firefox and Linux Desktop. The MS creation of a new OS every time someone sneezes sucks and is too expensive. And then, having to patch/update the OS because it is so full of holes it’s worst than Swiss cheese!!. Oh well!

Michael - Great feedback. That being said, even as a total Linux nut…I’d ease into things with either a LiveCD of something like PCLinuxOS or Wubi (Ubuntu without messing with partitions).
I say this as Linux is vastly different both in what is going to be better and what is going to present some challenges.

I have already tested Windows & Beta and the RC1, and it has the same DRM slow downs as Vista, and required at least a core 2 Duo to operate as quickly as Windows XP Pro. Plus I have tested a large suite of software that my clients ( 15 small companies around the Sacramento California area), and since these companies’s software all have some sort of failure on Windows 7, as well as Vista there is no hope of them “Upgrading” to Windows 7.
As a side note i was able to get 100% of their software suites to run as fast on WINE Ubuntu 9 as windows XP Pro SP3. If Microsoft can not provide this kind of compatability. Since some of these software run databases, and other important aspects of these small companies ( < 45 employees) and siome of these pieces of software are no longer supported by MICROSOFT, or other companies that have have since quit or gone bankrupt these companies are in for a major source of hurt if they are forcedd to run Windows Vista or Windows 7, Since these companies have supported me, I have supported them and have given them the good news, that they can run their required software suites FOREVER with LINUX, and WINE. So Microsoft can go bankrupt, and WE DON’T Care!!!!
