To Boxee Or Not Boxee

I have been working with Boxee as a tester since what must have been pretty close to day one. And when I first tried it, I was not impressed as I never was able to get it installed. Today with my current release of Ubuntu 9.04 using PulseAudio, things are working generally pretty well. Okay, at least considering it is still in alpha stages.

And thanks to a recent infusion of about six million dollars, I am hopeful that it will continue moving forward with its cross platform efforts and maybe, thanks to now being seen as more of a player than other open source options running with well wishes and almost no money, it can encourage ABC and WB, among others, to stop forcing people to use specific browsers and platforms only.

As Hulu has taught us all, there is no need to subject ourselves to Silverlight or special media players that will only install as exe files. It’s tired, 1990s thinking that is about as effective as “Web site best viewed with (insert browser here).”

After playing around a bit with Boxee, I am really liking what I see. It’s not as visually attractive as say, Plex at this point. But perhaps some of that venture money can help with that.
