Open Sesame: Why Open Source BI, Data Integration, And Data Warehousing Solutions Are Gaining In Acceptance

There should be an image here! This white paper provides practical recommendations and facts to consider for a successful deployment of open source software.

In the beginning, open source solutions were the shiny play things of the techno crowd. After all, they were fun, new, and most important, free. No one would have considered using them in any real world corporate IT shops…

Today, open source solutions are not only being considered, they are being implemented by large and small enterprises — at rates that are mind-boggling. This paper examines the challenges faced by organizations today regarding their BI, data integration, and data warehousing environments, why traditional solutions fall short, and the rise of upstart open source companies. This white paper by Industry Analyst Dr. Claudia Imhoff addresses such critical issues as:

  • The challenges facing companies today
  • Why traditional BI solutions often fall short
  • What open source BI solutions bring to the table
  • Data integration, going beyond BI
  • Considerations in adopting BI open source software

After reading about how far open source BI has come, I gave the Pentaho BI Suite a trial recently.(Pentaho being one of the leading open source BI platforms)

I must say if you are looking to code your own BI system it may be a good way to jump start. However if you are looking for an easy affordable BI system that works out of the box then, they don’t even come close. Not to mention the subscription plans can cost you in one year(depending on configuration) what it would cost to buy a BI platform from one of the big players, even if it is cheaper for the first year you pay the subscription every year so after 2 or 3 years will certainly pass the costs of purchasing a more well known BI platform.

Now some people will think that you don’t need the support, and with most major BI tools the amount of support you need is limited. That said Pentaho doesn’t come close to working out of the box, documentation is poor and very little information concerning the most recent versions is available online, so if you have a problem(and chances are pretty good you will) and you want an answer you pretty much need to be on support.

The different tools you need to use to deploy a BI system are poorly integrated, well that’s being nice they are not integrated at all.

I understand that open source BI needs the support model to make money, and making the programs properly integrated and easy to use might mean that support isn’t needed as much and thus they might make less money. However for a potential customer doing a real cost/performance analysis the tools simply do not come close to what the competition provides, and to top it off it ends up costing more… go figure.
