Bill Gates Vs Hurricanes
Bill Gates has done a lot of good over the years. Certainly his foundation is a fine example of this. So despite my misgivings with some of the things that Microsoft has done over the years, I was not really surprised to hear that Bill Gates is looking tackle hurricanes.
According to this article, it seems that some recent patent filings have lead people to believe that Gates is looking to control the weather. Yes, I am completely serious. He among others, are looking into ways of hurricane-suppression techniques. And based on his track record in life thus far, I am not willing to say that it could not be done. He has the money and the will…
At this point, the entire idea is merely just that – an idea on paper. There has not been any signs of life or evidence that this will even come to fruition. All of this said however, I think that the idea of some kind of hurricane reduction would be of benefits to thousands. Hopefully something like this will be implemented. Or would this be a bit too “Mr. Burns” controlling the weather?

I don’t know… I think that storms happen for a purpose and, by manipulating Nature’s behavior, we could be in trouble on the long run.
Besides, wouldn’t some sort of sophisticated tracking device that does more than what we have be more useful than try and tamper with the balance of nature?

Great idea, obviously.
BUT! even if he is able to implement it. Thats a bit much power for one person, me thinks!

Hasn’t Mr. Gates ever seen the movie “The Butterfly Effect”? If you try to mess with the weather you end up running away from staff in a mental hospital so you can find video tape of your pregnant mom and go back to that time so you never existed in the first place. It’s insanity to even try!!!

Of course trying to control the weather would be a little ballsy of us but we are human. We are here to push the boundaries. With the understanding that i know nothing about hurricanes except they gain speed/size over bodies of water I propose a giant dryer/dehumidifier to suck all the moisture from the beast so that it loses steam and is reduced to a tropical storm. Perhaps a giant pack of silica gel like the ones you get with shoes and pillows?

Ah, the old “Weather Control” ploy! ;-)
For how many years, decades, and centuries has mankind been through such experiments? From Native American (Indian) rain dances right up through the HAARP project.
Oh, I wish him luck! Such an accomplishment WOULD be a boon to mankind. But I think, all in all, it will still amount to not much more than dancing around in circles and shaking rattles at the sky.
But who knows…perhaps this time something will come of it. Nothing is discovered by sitting back and saying, “It can’t be done.”

Weather control is coming.
The date of its arrival is dependent upon our ability to use available resources and direct them towards solution of this major problem.
IT, in particularly Web 2.0 technology, now enables us to assemble a research and development team comprised of the entire world and dedicate this community to solving major world problems.
Bill Gates has always been a leader and his involvement in solving hurricanes reflects a trend.
