HP, Toshiba, IBM and others wanted a simple way of not having to test for each product. It was expensive to put out tests and keep track of the people. A+ Techs could do warranty repairs and it freed up a lot of resources previously wasted taking tests with redundant questions. A+ came into being as a hardware repair cert. Would probably not have wasted the time and made the student loans that I did for about two years. I went for the Masters as a chance to better myself and my position, and instead made it much worse. Everyone in IT wants an A+ certification before they will look at my Masters. The A+ will open more doors than it closes. Though perhaps not as popular as Windows, the Mac/Linux space has grown significantly, and qualified professionals are always in need.
