A+ came into being as a hardware repair cert. HP, Toshiba, IBM and others wanted a simple way of not having to test for each product. It was expensive to put out tests and keep track of the people.

A+ Techs could do warranty repairs and it freed up a lot of resources previously wasted taking tests with redundant questions.

[...] This latest post I did on why you need so much more than a mere A+ Cert really hit home for a lot of readers apparently. Seems like the email is still coming in strong. But one email I received that I thought was interesting was about someone who is about to go on an interview to get a job in an IT dept. What other advice was there to utilize? [...]

I wish someone had told me several years ago to get an A+ certification instead of an IT Masters. Would probably not have wasted the time and made the student loans that I did for about two years.

I went for the Masters as a chance to better myself and my position, and instead made it much worse. Everyone in IT wants an A+ certification before they will look at my Masters.

The A+ will open more doors than it closes.

Thanks
Theresa

Another direction you can go is for Apple or Linux Certifications. Though perhaps not as popular as Windows, the Mac/Linux space has grown significantly, and qualified professionals are always in need. Plus, have a more rounded list of credentials can increase your chances of getting a job.
