Best Remote Software For The Job
It’s something that has been on my mind lately. Which is truly the best remote desktop software available for those not wanting to use Windows own remote desktop software? For some, the best choice might be something like GoToMyPC or LogMeIn. In other cases, RDP solutions are the best fit as they provide zero cost with maximum benefit. And for the most part, these are considered the best for those looking for a truly cross platform solution. But there are some challenges along the way.
First of all, Ubuntu to Windows XP Pro using RDP, for instance, means you can forget about connecting to an XP Home box. But there is always the VNC option I suppose, as this will work with pretty much anything. Only thing is that if you are operating outside of your own network, you had better look into adding SSH for improved security.
At the end of the day, however, most people are using Windows and something easy to configure like LogMeIn will suffice. And yes, this software has a Mac option as well for you OS X users.
As for those of you still using that old installation of XP Home that wish to connect to it via RDP, never fear. You can actually tweak your Home install into something that will solve this issue.

Matt H, I’ve used a number of solutions over the years for remote access/remote control. Crossloop is pretty decent, it’s free, and it’s cross platform. Although it is fee-based, I love love love LogMeIn Rescue.

I use Team Viewer 4 for fixing stuff. Free for non corporate use and the client only has to download a exe and give you a few numbers. Nothing to setup at all.

For a fastest connection to a remote PC I use TeamViewer, meaning that the person from the other end must not do more than 2 steps to accept my connection. This is what I look for, a way for the other guy just to click yes or accept and then I have control of the computer.
The other alternative, which I love is using RAdmin software. It seems so easy after using over 5 year, could it be that long ?!

I use Remote Management tools to support networks, servers and personal computers, so it’s important that whatever I use, be cross platform. That said, it also has to be easy enough for the average computer user to install and setup. I’ve found GoToAssist Express to be the best commercial solution for remote administration and support. However another free option, and one that I’ve used with some success is CrossLoop.

I like showmypc for windows. It’s using vnc framework, but has an easy executable file to download. The person serving their screen connection just needs to give the person viewing / controlling a password. Similar to crossloop.

Same for me, TeamViewer is very nice, zero install you can download and start it instantly (I think they use dynamic /TEMP file extraction and run them from here but this is transparent and feels like zero install), small size, you can reverse screens controls between local and remote, free for non professional usage.
