USB 3.0 Comes To Linux?

I honestly must say I did not see this one coming. Apparently Sarah Sharp of Intel fame has managed to make sure that Linux will be the first desktop platform to enjoy the benefits of USB 3.0. As you can see from a fairly recent edit of the Wikipedia page for USB, it was speculated that the Linux platform would be first even though some folks likely expected other platforms to be first to the table.

Obviously, this means nothing without devices to test this out with. But considering the fact that I have yet to run into a new USB device that was not added to the kernel in a very reasonable amount of time, I do not think this will be a problem at all once new USB 3.0 devices are brought forth to market.

What I am looking forward to see is what devices will be first to support USB 3.0. Logic would dictate that among the first will be external hard drives, something desktop Linux does very well with. But I am sure other devices will follow as well once the latest USB devices begin showing up around 2010.

its nice to hear that

Gee, how exciting. The linux USB committee still hasn’t added
all the analog video capture device drivers to the kernel and now they will be fumbling around with 3.0. That’s the one big problem with ‘open source’, there is nobody at the top to pound on the
desk and say GET IT DONE. Linus, are you listening?

What Do You Think?
