Forget Mobile, The Future Is Washing Machines

I am still finding myself doing a double take at the prospect of Internet powered washing machines and these same machines now embroiled in what will become what the mobile market place is now: a hotbed of competition.

While some are thinking that Google Android makes a lot of sense in the embedded world for such devices as washing machines, others feel that Microsoft Windows is the best approach. As a matter of fact, Microsoft argues that, in the grand scheme of things, paying their license fees actually saves the OEM money. How? Apparently MS feels it is cheaper to develop applications for its platform than others based on Linux. I think we know that is a matter of tools, talent and marketing that decides this, but whatever. Apparently there are other thoughts that lead me to conclude that I am right.

To take things to consider as well includes why anyone outside of possibly George Jetson needs the Internet on a washing machine. I can see it now. Complaints rolling in when the latest firmware upgrade created too much spin or flooded the basement due to a surplus of water used…
