Tips For Organizing Your Workspace

My co-workers and I recently relocated to new office space. Unpacking my boxes got me thinking about how I was going to set up my desk space so that it was clean and organized. Given that I spend most of my day at my desk, I wanted to make sure it was both productive and efficient.

There is certainly no right or wrong way to organize your desk. The most important point to remember is that an organized desk is far more productive than an unorganized desk. You need quick access to the things you use most frequently and you need to know where to find everything else. With this in mind, here are a few tips to help you set up your desk space.

  • Keep your desk clutter free. A sure way to clutter up your desk is by leaving little things, such as pens, scattered around your desk. Instead, keep items such as pens, pencils, car keys, cell phones, etc. in specific places.
  • Organize the wires. Wires from computers, phones, blackberries, and other electronics can easy make a desk feel disorganized. Spend some time organizing your electronics and wires. Not only will it cut down on clutter, but it will prevent you from tripping over or accidentally unplugging wires.
  • Make frequently accessed files accessible. Although you likely have your own approach to filing, remember to keep those files that you use most frequently in an easily accessible location. You may want to keep such files in folders on your desk and file all others in cabinets.
  • Use drawers for specific purposes. To ensure you can quickly find materials you are looking for, designate specific drawers for specific purposes. For example, one drawer may be for supplies, another for paper and another for personal items.
