Mystery Virus Concerns Hit The Feds

Reading about stuff like this really makes us second guess how much trust we put into the nation’s computer networks. At the very least, articles such as the one linked above serve as a reminder that no network is truly as safe as we might like to believe it is.

What’s worse is that, in the case of the virus that hit FBI and the U.S. Marshals Service, the source of the infection remains unknown. This is scary as it means that it is possible that even once this infection has been resolved for the Feds, we may very well end up seeing it crop again in other governmental networks.

It’s clear to me that US-CERT is likely going to have its hands full. I really believe that we will be seeing this issue come up again. But next time, it might not be happening in a non-critical network. The next time this virus rears its head, the affected networks might be fighting off a much more dangerous strain.
