Mac And PC Both Suck

After watching the silliness going back and forth with Apple vs Microsoft, it now seems that the latest Mac ads are out again. This time, as if there was ever a doubt, we see the “PCs have viruses” routine. This is how Apple is countering Microsoft’s “PCs are cheaper to buy” routine. What I found so funny about this is that Apple does not try to point out why its products cost more.

So to bring this to a close as someone who is not a fan of either option, allow me to share my feelings as follows.

  1. The notebooks shown in the Microsoft commercials are often considered as using crap hardware. I am sorry, but outside of the fact that Lauren makes me want to claw my ears out of my head with that bouncy “aren’t I fun” song & dance, she is also quite clueless as to what the value of the hardware being purchased actually is. For her, cheap is king.
  2. Apple needs to move on. Yes, the commercials were fun for a while. But considering the fact that malware is, indeed, making a pretty solid appearance on OS X these days, might be worth highlighting some of the Mac’s other benefits. The company used to do this occasionally, but not as much anymore.

So what can we learn from this? Your OS is a preference based on what you are trying to do. It is not a religion — rather, it’s a way to accomplish specific tasks. Sometimes this is limited by software only available on one platform. In other instances, users are bound by what is familiar or insist in listening to people who have never actually used the other platform they are working so hard to put down. In any case, the facts of the matter are: there is no silver bullet, all three major platforms can be exploited by malware, and you will, indeed, get what you pay for on the hardware front.
