Will Windows 7 Win Me Back?

It’s a question that has been asked of me for sometime now. Will I ever find myself returning to Windows upon the release of Windows 7. My answer in each instance has been no, but not because there is anything wrong with that release of Windows. In many ways, I believe that Windows 7 is what Vista should have been. Lighter weight, working with less resources and in the end, something that might actually compel XP users to have a reason to abandon their ancient OS.
So why would I not bother with it then? Simple, I am not presented with a reason to. Despite all of the hot air you will see elsewhere, most Linux users do not hate or love their OS more than any other. Rather, they simply use what they find is best meeting with their needs. For me, Linux both enabled me to earn a living along with the fact that I have saved thousands on not upgrading my hardware on all of my systems. It’s been beneficial for me personally.
Does this mean that everyone should go and immediately switch? No, why would you want to do that? Unless there is a compelling reason for you to change what works for you, the idea switching midstream is really not for everyone. I have found that this is mostly true amongst the geeks. While I have found that newer PC users are MUCH easier to switch over as they have less of an idea of what “computing” is supposed to be like. It’s interesting, but honestly, the strange fact of the matter is old habits do indeed, die hard with many people. More power to them.

Right on! The hype is always promoting the upgrade treadmill, and so are most of the shill’s/press folks. Hasn’t this industry matured to the point that we only need to upgrade when our applications dictate that we do, and then only those systems that require it??? Why convert a whole data center just for the sake of a few “look nice doodads”? …and as for that argument about better security…how about the security risk of restructuring your security system ( that you spent many hours perfecting ) to accomodate a “new” OS??? Sure Windows 7 looks great to me, but why do I NEED it??? Here’s the real challenge to Microsoft… “why don’t you license your old OS’s…(e.g. XP, Vista, Me, Win98 ) to a third party to sell in competition with your new OS’s and let the best offering for the money win?? that would seem to be a win-win for everyone.
