To SSH A Chumby

Posted by on Apr 3, 2009 | 5 Comments

It’s something I have been meaning to do for sometime now. Maybe as a way to get in touch with my inner self better. For whatever the reason, I have decided that I want to SSH into my Chumby. My reasons are vast and mysterious. But truth be told, it is mainly because I want to see what there is to see inside this tiny little Linux based monster.

The Wiki guide I linked to above gives you a small glimpse into some of the many reasons why someone might wish to do this. Basically, a combination of fun in hacking the box into doing some new stuff along with the fact that I can really add some extended functionality not currently offered by the Chumby out of the box.

Are you a Chumby hacker? Perhaps you have other household devices laying around screaming to be attached by a screw driver and a holiday weekend? If either applies to you, hit the comments and share your story!

Create a blank folder on a USB drive, name it start_sshd. Power down you Chumby, Insert the USB into the back of Chumby. Start up Chumby again. Go to the control panel, go to Settings, then go to Chumby Info, then in the upper right corner you wil se a weird symbol…, Click on it. You with have about 6 buttons, Select SSHD, It shouuld come up with the information to insert to a FTP app.

As far as Gimp, wasn’t there another prg that added to the functionality of Gimp so it would almost do everything that Photoshop would do including a same look?

Robert, I think you might be right on that. I need to dig deeper, as the press on it must have been dim. But I do remember something about this…just don’t recall what exactly. :)
