Migration Tools In Vista

Many people avoid migrating to Windows Vista because the thought of moving all their settings and files seems like too much work. Microsoft provides two different technologies that you can use to make it easier to migrate to Windows Vista: Windows Easy Transfer and User State Migration Tool.

Windows Easy Transfer is a tool that is included with Windows Vista. You can use it to transfer the following components between computers:

  • Files and folders (everything within the Documents, Pictures and Shared Documents folders)
  • E-mail settings, contacts and messages
  • Program settings
  • User accounts and settings
  • Internet settings and favorites
  • Music
  • Pictures and videos

Use Windows Easy Transfer when you want to migrate settings and files for all of the users on a single computer to a new computer. In cases where a large number of computers that need to be migrated, you would use the User State Migration Tools (USMT).

The User State Migration Tool will migrate the following components:

  • Each user profile including folders, desktop files, Start Menu, Quick launch settings, and Favorites
  • Folders from the Public profile
  • Files types
  • Access control lists
  • User accounts
