When you install Windows Vista, you create a user account and password and select a picture to represent the account. Going forward, you use that user account and password each time you want to log on to your computer.
If you share your computer with other family members, one of the first things you will want to do is set up user accounts for each of your family members. Creating user accounts is a Windows Vista is quite simple, once you figure out where to go in the Control Panel. All of the user account tasks are grouped under the User Accounts and Family Safety option in the Control Panel. Once you open this option, the rest of the process is quite similar to that in XP.
The exact steps for creating a new user account in Windows Vista are outlined below:
- Click Start and click Control Panel.
- Click User Accounts and Family Safety.
- Under User Accounts, click Add or remove user accounts.
- Click Create a new account.
- Type in the account name. Select the account type: Standard or Administrator.
- Click Create Account.
- Select the account you just created. Click Create a password.
- Type in a password for the user account and an option password hint.
- Click Create password.
Repeat the steps above for each additional account that you need to create.
When you created a user account using the steps above, you assigned a password to the account. However, Windows Vista lets you create user accounts that are not assigned passwords. To log on, all a user needs to do is click their account name. The problem with this is that anyone who sits down at your computer can potentially get full or unrestricted access to your computer.
If you have a user account that does not have a password, it is very easy to add a password:
- Click Start and click Control Panel.
- Click the User Accounts and Family Safety option. If you are in Classic View, click the User Accounts icon.
- Click the User Accounts option.
- Click the Create a password for your account option.
- Enter the password you want to assign to the user account.
- Type the password again to confirm it.
- Click the Create password button to confirm your new password.
- Close the User Accounts window.

That’s all very fine, but how do I switch from the Picture Welcome Screen to one like XP, with just a sign-in?
