Accessibility Features In Vista Part IV

Posted by on Jan 27, 2009 | 3 Comments

Vista notifies you of certain events by playing various sounds. However, for users with hearing challenges, it may be easier to receive notification for systems sounds visually as opposed to audibly.

If you want Vista to generate a visual warning for system sounds, you must enabled Sound Sentry within the Ease of Access Center. Click Start, Control Panel the Ease of Access. Under Explore all settings, select Use text or visual alternatives for sounds. Select the Turn on visual notifications for sounds (Sound Sentry) option.

You can then choose from one of the following visual warnings:

  • None
  • Flash active caption bar
  • Flash active window
  • Flash desktop

If you want captions displayed for the sounds made by programs, place a check beside Use ShowSounds option. Click OK to apply your changes.

Captions
The Captions accessibility feature in Vista is along the same lines as Sound Sentry. Many programs use sound to indicate that an activity is happening but some also provide text captions as rough equivalents to these sounds. This is similar to closed captioning for television programs and makes it easier for individuals with hearing impairments to use various programs.

By turning on text captions, visual equivalents to sounds will be displayed on the computer screen. The only downside to this accessibility feature is that the programs must also support text captions. To enable Captions in Vista, Click Start, Control Panel then Ease of Access. Under Explore all settings, select Use text or visual alternatives for sounds. Select the Turn on text captions for spoken dialog (when available) option and click Save.

Relaxation is also a key. I’d say it all adds to enjoying and having fun while you’re learning to play the guitar. When you are comfortable with your guitar, I guess it’s safe to say that everything will follow.
