The nice thing about the Delegates feature is that you can be very specific in the permissions you grant to a user over your Outlook data. You can assign a delegate one of three roles over any of your Outlook data:
- None — delegate does not have access
- Reviewer — delegate can read items
- Author — delegate can read and create items
- Editor — delegate can read, create and modify items
For example, if you assign a delegate the Reviewer role over your Inbox, they will be able to read your messages as well as create/send messages on your behalf. So lets take a closer look at some of the common ways that the Delegates feature is used.
If you have an assistant, you may want to let that person view the appointments in your Outlook calendar. You can even grant them permission to add appointments to your calendar and schedule meetings on your behalf. To accomplish this is Outlook 2002:
- Within Outlook, click on the Tools menu and select Options. The Options dialog box will appear.
- Select the Delegates tab.
- Click the Add button. The Add Users dialog box will appear.
- From the Global Address List, select the person you want to grant permission to.
- Click OK. The Delegate Permissions dialog box appears.
- Click the drop down arrow beside the Calendar option and select the Editor option.
- If you want the delegate to receive copies of meeting requests sent to you, also click the Delegate receives copies of meeting-related messages sent to me option.
- If you want the delegate notified of the permission you have just given them over your Calendar, click the Automatically send a message to delegate summarizing these permissions option.
- Click OK.

For exchange permissions delegating there is a great tool called security explorer for exchange.
It provides an intuitive way for permissions management by exposing every object’s permissions in a handy tree view.
It also inlcludes some other useful features like permissions backup and restore, permissions searching and cloning that are unavailable with native tools.
