IT And PC Repair In The New Economy

Seems like everywhere we turn these days, people are being laid off or in some cases, even booted from their homes. Despite the fact that there are some things you can do after losing your job, the reality of just how tight things are bound to get in our fields is becoming painfully close to coming to head.
IT geeks, how are things in your neck of the woods? I have heard some people are seeing a spike of opportunities while others are being laid off by the truck load? I think that all of us out there in Lockergnome land would appreciate a heads up in what is taking place in your neck of the woods.
Computer repair men and women, I have been hearing of serious slow downs. With few exceptions, I have been hearing of consolidation amongst repair outfits all the way to individual techs resorting to taking on extra retail jobs such at Big Box stores just to make ends meet. How bad has it been for you personally? I really want to know.
Please hit the comments and let all of us know what is going on in your neck of the woods. From the sounds of things, it is going to keep getting tighter, so I think it might be best to hear from some of the worst hit areas first so all of us can better plan should things really hit the fan.

All of September and most of October were extremely slow compared to previous years. Hardware sales is way down, the only thing keeping me afloat is service. The last week of October and all of /November, so far are much better. I am located in Eastern Long Island, New York

I got laid off in 1998 and have not been able to get regular work since. I was at one time a well regarded Novell CNE and Microsoft MCP and excellent Management and Project Management skills but alas getting close to 50 years of age sounded my death bell. Fortunately I invested wisely in my working life and thought I would manage OK. Sadly I did not count on the inept and uncontrolled fiscal situation in the USA and never thought that it would in any event have such far reaching effects in Australia. We managed our economy pretty sensibly but because of American corporate greed and some kind of insanity prevailing we are paying a huge price now. Our dollar has dropped from a high of 96.7cents against the US dollar to almost 60c. My investments have dropped by almost 50% on paper. The next shock will be in the first half of 2009 when dividends start to fall and then we will all begin to understand what recession/depression really means. I work as a private consultant now. I was quite busy until end August. I have not had a worthwhile job since then so yes the effects are hitting hard and more often hitting the small business owner and contractor. I hope the decision makers in the USA get a decent kick up the rear and those taking over begin to understand the world needs more from its management groups than mere profit taking and high Executive Salaries.
