Depending On IE

I see it all the time, various “made for the Web” applications that will not run in anything but Internet Explorer. And while this is often times due to reliance on ActiveX, in some other instances, it is a simple matter that the only browser it was tested with was indeed, various forms of Internet Explorer.

For the love of Pete, wake up people. Despite us still living in a Windows world, we by no means live in one run exclusively by the always tired Internet Explorer. Nearly every Windows user I know is using either Firefox or Opera. Those Windows users still working with IE are doing so either because that is what the company policy dictates its use or their machines at home came installed with it.

All of this said, I have no problem with using IE as part of a bigger picture. I can even see the value of using it for consistency in the work place with regard to PC system policy. Still, I would also love to see some new blood in on corporate PCs. I do not care if it means using Jim-Bob’s Browser Surpreme (I made that one up), just stop putting all of your tokens into such a limited browser! Let’s expand our horizons a little, shall we?

Hey man you hit the nail on the head. I do a few things in the web environment and I hate having to make special changes just because IE is so stupid. I can understand using it if that is what your company dictates, but otherwise you just don’t know a lot about tech. You know how it goes though, most people just want something to work and they don’t care what goes on behind the scenes.

Absolutely agree.

The biggest issue that I have with IE is that it frequently doesn’t allow pages to display correctly that are written in accordance with the web standards!

IE encourages non-compliant design and web pages devised for IE should always be checked in other browsers. Google Chrome has obviously been introduced by Google to take advantage of their online office-like applications. This will become the future of collaborative working in the future and it is important that pages display correctly in Chrome!
