Ten Dollar Laptops?

Posted by on Jul 31, 2008 | 3 Comments

As I stumbled upon this article, I honestly beleived I must be misreading it. Ten dollar notebooks? Come on, what is the catch? With the immense challenge of producing a hundred dollar notebook, the very idea of a seemed to be completely ridiculous as far as I was concerned. One thing I can comment on however is that some of the plans being put forth by the Indian Government such as Internet for al and super-cheap computing could transform the region very quickly.

Then comes the truth of the matter on the notebooks – it’s $100, not $10. Yes, one translation error was swept up by every news agency you can think of and as luck would have it, this small typo/miscommunication ended up landing the news press time that it likely would not have otherwise had.

So what do you think? Is yet another $100 notebook worth pursuing? Hit the comments, share your thoughts.

dont think a hundred dollar laptop is likely in the near future, maybe from obsolete technology or subsidising. Companies like http://www.ndc.co.uk sell refurbished laptops cheap but they’re still way off the hundred dollar mark

Even before I read your post, “10 Dollar Laptops” brought to mind the saying, “If its sounds to good to be true, it probably is.” Seems to me if the Indian Government wants to provide newer laptops 100$ would be doable if they find willing computer makers and subsidize it, which may prove to be hard if there is rampant corruption in the Indian Gov.

hi yeah I think that $100 laptops are not as far off as you’d think.. with develpments being as fast as they are these days, I predict a $100 in the next 5 years, and $10 in ten years.
I think that they will not have a screen, but will use projector technology, and be more like a mobile phone.
