Install Windows Server Update Services 3.0 Service Pack 1 Part V

Once you install WSUS 3.0 SP1, a wizard will automatically launch to walk you through the configuration process. In the part III, we looked at configuring the upstream server and the proxy settings. Assuming you completed these steps, you’re ready to move on and continue with the configuration process.

Languages

At this point, you can specify in what languages you want to download updates. The procedure will vary slightly depending on whether the server is obtaining updates from Microsoft Update or an upstream server.

If obtaining updates from Microsoft Update:

  1. Click the Download updates in all languages, including new languages option to get updates in all languages.
  2. To only download updates in specific languages, click Download updates only in these languages, and select the languages for which you want updates.

If obtaining updates from an upstream server:

  1. Click the Download updates only in these languages option if the upstream server is configured to download update files in specific languages and select the languages for which you want updates.
  2. Alternatively, click the Download updates in all languages supported by the upstream server option. Doing so will cause the upstream server to download updates in all languages, including languages that were not originally set up for the upstream server.

Update Products

At this point, you are ready to identify the categories and products you want the WSUS server to download. From the Choose Products page, click the categories and products that are pertinent to your network. You can choose an entire category such as Windows or you can choose specific products under a category such as Windows Server 2003. Once you made you selections, click Next to proceed to the Classifications page.

Update Classifications

In order to limit the amount of updates downloaded by a WSUS server, you can configure classifications. From the Choose Classifications, select all the classifications for which you want to receive updates. There are nine classifications to choose including:

  • Critical Updates
  • Definition Updates
  • Drivers
  • Feature Packs
  • Security Updates
  • Service Packs
  • Tools
  • Update Rollups
  • Updates

Synchronization Schedule

Finally, the wizard will prompt you to configure the synchronization schedule for the WSUS server. During synchronization, the WSUS server will connect to Microsoft Update or the upstream server to determine if there are any new updates available since the last synchronization.

  1. From the Set Sync Schedule page, choose whether to perform update metadata synchronization manually or automatically.
  2. If you choose to synchronize manually, you will have to initiate the synchronization process from the WSUS Administration console.
  3. If you choose to synchronize automatically, the WSUS server will synchronize the interval you specify.

At this point, you can click Finish and the initial configuration of your WSUS server is complete. Note that you can also configure these options through the WSUS Administrative console. In part VI, we’ll look at some of the advanced options that can be configured through the administrative console.
