Install Windows Server Update Services 3.0 Service Pack 1 Part IV

With WSUS 3.0 SP1 now installed, you’re ready to begin configuring your server. As soon as the installation is complete, the WSUS Server Configuration Wizard will open. The wizard walks you through configuring the following options:

  • Upstream Server
  • Proxy Server
  • Update Languages
  • Update Products
  • Update Classifications
  • Synchronization Schedule

Upstream Server
A WSUS server does not necessarily have to obtain updated directly from the Microsoft Update web site. It can, in fact, download updates from another WSUS server, referred to as an upstream server. The WSUS Server Configuration Wizard will prompt you to specify where the WSUS server will obtain updates.

  1. From the Choose Upstream Server page, select the source from which this server will get its updates (Microsoft Update or another WSUS server).
  2. If you choose to synchronize from Microsoft Update, you are finished with this page. Click Next, or select Specify Proxy Server from the left pane.
  3. If you choose to synchronize from another WSUS server, specify the server name and the port on which this server will communicate with the upstream server.
  4. Click Next.

Configuring Proxy Settings
By default, WSUS will be configured to obtain updates from Microsoft Update. If the server is behind a proxy server, you will need to configure the required proxy settings when the wizard prompts you to, as outlined below.

  1. From the Specify Proxy Server page, click the Use a proxy server when synchronizing option.
  2. Type in the proxy server name and port number.
  3. If credentials are required to connect through the proxy server, click Use user credentials to connect to the proxy server option and specify the username and password the WSUS server will use.
  4. Click Next.

Connecting to the Upstream Server
With the appropriate proxy settings configured, the wizard will prompt you to connect to the upstream server. Click the Start Connecting button. It may take a few minutes for the local server to establish a connection.

Once a connection has been established with the upstream server, the wizard will display the Choose Languages page. We’ll look more closely at this page and the remaining configuration options in the next installment of this series.
