Install Windows Server Update Services 3.0 Service Pack 1 Part III

Once the computer that will run WSUS 3.0 SP1 is configured to meet the hardware and software requirements, you can proceed with the installation process. You will need to download the install filer from Microsoft.

  1. Double click the installer file.
  2. Click Next when the Welcome screen appears.
  3. From the Installation Mode Selection page, select Full server installation including Administration Console. Click Next.
  4. Accept the terms of the license agreement and click Next.
  5. From the Select Update Source, click Store updates locally and select the location on the server where the updates will be stored. Click Next.
  6. On the Database Options screen, select the software used to manage the WSUS database. The default is Install Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Embedded Edition (Windows) on the computer. Click Next.
  7. From the Web Site Selection, specify the Web site that will be used by WSUS. The bottom of the screen will also list the URL that WSUS clients will obtain updates from and the URL for the WSUS console. Click Next.
  8. Review the settings on the Ready to Install Windows Server Update Services screen and click Next.
  9. Click Finish.

The steps outlined above will install WSUS as well as the Administration Console. You can remotely manage the WSUS server from any computer in a trusted domain. However, you need to install the administration console on each computer you will be performing remote administrative tasks.

To install the Administration Console:

  1. Double-click the installer file (the same installer file used in the previous steps).
  2. From the Welcome page, click Next.
  3. From the Installation Mode Selection page, select the Administration Console only check box, and then click Next.
  4. Review and accept the license agreement. Click Next.
  5. Click Finish.

Now that the software is installed, you are ready to begin configuring WSUS. To access the Administrative Console, click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and select Microsoft Windows Server Update Services 3.0. In the next installment of this article, I’ll go into more detail on configuring WSUS 3.0 SP1.
