Microsoft Needs Yahoo
It’s a simple fact, MSN as a content service has been largely, a less than successful effort. And Yahoo, would frankly allow Yahoo to take over an existing online property that has eyeballs. What they do with those eyeballs after that, is up to Microsoft.
Yahoo could likely keep skipping along without Microsoft, but they could potentially see a surge as Microsoft could infuse them with the capital they need. Microsoft would do well to purchase Yahoo as expected and despite whatever you may hear, Microsoft knows full well that it will be massively easier to use Yahoo’s content network to gain market share than continue throwing money at their own.
Am I wrong? Is MSN in a strong enough position to retool, and simply take on Yahoo as to make them a moot point in response should Yahoo opt to not allow the take-over? Hit the comments, you decide.
Todd Lamothe Resets Our Computer With Windows SteadyState
Richard and I talk to Greg Lamothe at RunAs Radio about Windows SteadyState. SteadyState allows administrators to configure PCs to roll back to a base configuration after every reboot. Combined with Group Policy for restricting access to resources, you can create the perfect kiosk computer that cleans off all traces of the previous user, ready for the next.
Todd Lamothe is a Systems Administrator for the County of Lennox & Addington — Information Services Department; supporting their Libraries and Museums throughout their 12 points of service. He also provides support for the Leeds & Grenville and Prince Edward County public Libraries as well as other departments within the County of Lennox & Addington. He is a member of the Ottawa Windows Server User Group (OWSUG) and its associated certification study group, member of the board on the newly formed SQL Pass Ottawa Chapter and is also a Microsoft Certified System Administrator and a Microsoft Certified Trainer. He started using Windows SteadyState in the County of Lennox & Addington’s libraries when the program was in Version 1.1 and called the Microsoft Shared Computer Toolkit. He was part of the closed beta team for version 2.0 and now is working with 2.5.
The Importance Of End-User Policies And Procedures Part I
Do end users in your company call the service desk wanting assistance with applications unsupported by the company? When your technical support analysts visit user workstations to troubleshoot problems, do they find problems are the result of the installation of unauthorized hardware?
If so, your help desk and tech support staff are spending time fixing problems that could be avoided. When any user in the company can install applications or add new hardware, the results include an undue burden on tech support, security breaches, loss or compromise of data, spread of viruses, and increased use (waste) of precious network bandwidth.
So what can companies do to prevent end users from installing unsupported software or hardware? Simple: implement policies and procedures.
Written policies should be established that define who can install what and who can do what on company computers. Then, wherever possible, put in place operating procedures that prevent users from breaching your written policies. These can include things like monitoring software, group policies, or even making changes to the workstation’s registry to prevent users from doing things they shouldn’t.
