A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To My Own Blog
Since late last year, I’ve been maintaining a personal blog to communicate to my friends and family. I think it’s a much more effective communications tool than e-mail, although I do use e-mail to tell people when I’ve posted major updates. The blog was born out of the decision my wife and I made last year to move away from Chicago to her home state of Oklahoma — and document the process of building a new home near Tulsa.
So imagine my surprise one day when my Kaspersky Internet Security suite started warning me that my own blog was a phishing site. I was both startled and concerned — then I came back down to reality. Who would bother hacking my personal blog for the purpose of phishing, it’s not like people are entering any sensitive information to it. Except for the random comment here and there, it’s mostly for people to read. I contacted Kaspersky support, and they agreed that it was a false positive.
The annoying thing was that I had to hit “allow” every time KIS gave me the phishing site warning on my blog — as I couldn’t find a way to enter the site into some kind of exception list. And I didn’t want to disable phishing protection entirely to stop the warning pop-ups, either. I’m pretty good at smelling bogus sites, but I’m not perfect. It’s easy to get cocky and then get forced to eat your own dog food.
So after 2-3 days of this, somehow the warnings just stopped and everything was back to normal. Still, it was a very odd experience.
