Skype Has Me Stumped On This One

Keeping in mind that the issue described here, would not affect me as do not use Windows as my primary OS. The following article did make me wonder who is asleep at the wheel over at Skype these days.

The problem lies in the fact that Skype uses a Windows Internet Explorer component with inappropriate security settings, researchers say. Instead of processing pages it renders with the more secure “Internet Zone” security setting, Skype uses IE’s “Local Zone” security setting, usually reserved for more trustworthy content.

Now I see this as stupid on a number of levels.

  • One, why in the world would Skype be allowing something so free wheeling to run in the Local Zone?
  • Why would there be a desire to use this with IE at all? Why not work with something totally off the wall like Opera, to figure out how to have a specialized window open up just for such a task. It may not be perfect, but I am willing to bet it would not be such an easy target as IE and it’s rather useless Zones.
  • Why are we trying to share videos in the first place this way? This is as half-baked as sharing “picture.exe” with grandma! Attachments (video in this case), of any sort, are not safe to share in Windows – we know this people.

In my mind, Skype is simply needing to stick to doing what they do best – make long distance conversations cheap. Stop trying to be a web 2.0 application and let the other companies swim around in that bubble.
