Preventing Job Burnout Part II

The previous installment of this article talked about some of the signs and symptoms of job burnout. If you have identified that you are suffering from job burnout, there are things you can do to get yourself out of the rut.

  • When it comes to your workload, prioritize your tasks. Not everything needs to be done at once. Identify those tasks that are non-critical, trivial, or even unnecessary.
  • Accept the fact that you cannot do everything and get used to delegating or dismissing certain tasks. Delegating and dismissing goes hand in hand with prioritizing tasks.
  • Do not overextend yourself. Be honest and realistic about what you can accomplish. Next time you say yes to another task, knowing that you do not have time in your work day to complete it, realize that it will likely take away from your personal time.
  • Do not work overtime. If you do work overtime, limit your overtime to only two days a week. Make it a point to leave work on time the other three days.
  • Manage your time effectively during the day. If you spend your entire day reading emails, by the end of the day, you will find that you have not accomplished everything you need to. Set aside specific times of the day that are “email-free” and dedicated to completing tasks.
  • Value your personal time and your personal life. A healthy personal life is just as important as a healthy work life. Engage in a variety of hobbies that interest you so work does not become the only thing in your life.
  • Take annual vacations. Use your vacation time to relax and get away from the stresses of everyday life.

If you incorporate some of these tips into your lifestyle but still find yourself feeling burned out, it might be time to consider a change in career or seek additional help in identifying the root cause of your burnout.
