Enabling RRAS In Windows Server 2003

A computer running Windows Server 2003 can function in many different roles. By enabling Routing and Remote Access (RRAS) you can turn your Windows Server 2003 computer into a remote access server. In this role, the server acts as the interface between remote access clients and the private network. Remote access clients connect to the remote access server using a VPN or dial-up connection. Connection attempts are either granted or denied based on the remote access policies on the server.

You can configure Windows Server 2003 as a remote access server using the steps listed below.

  1. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and click Routing and Remote Access. The Routing and Remote Access console will appear.
  2. Select the server listed under Server Status. From the Action menu, click Configure and Enable Routing and Remote Access.
  3. The Routing and Remote Access Server Setup Wizard appears. Click Next to continue.
  4. Verify that Remote access (dial-up or VPN) is selected. Click Next.
  5. Select Dial-up to enable the server to receive dial-up connections. Click Next.
  6. From the IP Address Assignment dialog box, verify that Automatically is selected. Otherwise select from a specified range. Click Next.
  7. If you selected to configure a specified range of IP addresses, click New and type in the start and end IP address. Click OK.
  8. The address range you specified will appear in the list of Address ranges. Click Next.
  9. Verify that No, use Routing and Remote Access to authenticate connection requests. Alternately, if there is a RADIUS server configured, select Yes, set up this server to work with a RADIUS server. Click Next.
  10. If you selected to use a RADIUS server, type in the name of the RADIUS server and the shared secret. Click Next to continue.
  11. Review the summary. Click Finish.
  12. A message will appear indicating that a DHCP Relay Agent is required to relay messages between DHCP remote access clients and a DHCP server on the network. Click OK.
  13. The remote access server will appear with a green arrow beside it in the console indicating that the Routing and Remote Access service is now running.
