Is Overclocking My Video Card Responsible?

Not sure about this one, so I figured I’d post this here to see what you IT Professionals think. Gnomie darkxero01 writes:

Hey Chris,

I have an HIS x1650 PRO 512 MB card. I play a lot of different games and the card seems to work just fine, but it does lag in some spots so I decided to overlock using ATITool.

I tried using Find Max Mem and, within about ten seconds, my computer would mess up; I figured that the memory was at its max. So I tried using Find Max Core and that took my core up pretty high (75 mhz more). Now I have noticed, when I play my games, some things are now faster than before. Things like the way player models breathe, animations — just about everything is slightly faster than normal.

The Source Stress Test used to normally take about 30 to 45 seconds to clear, and now it takes my computer maybe 20 seconds. Is this normal when you overclock a video card? I don’t really want to clock my video card back down because even though a lot of things are faster, I dont get lag in areas where I used to.

So my question is: is this normal? And why can’t my memory be overclocked?

System Specs:

  • AMD 64 x2 4400+
  • HIS x1650 PRO
  • 2 GB RAM
  • Windows Vista Home Premium

Overclocking your video Memory can be pretty tricky , DOnt try using the Automatic find max speed , it will often just crash out , considering you have found the max core speed i would recomend you drop in about 5mhz and then slowly bring your memory speed up (testing as you go) till it fails , when you’ve found its failing point drop that 1 just a little too.

You’ll then find you card is push as hard as it should be pushed and will remain stable (if you followed the directions and dropped them just a little)
