New Desk Arrived Today

  • No Related Post

Today my secondary desk (for my other two Linux boxes; including my Zonbu box plus my Windows box) arrived today. Unfortunately, it is nothing like this one. Seriously, I would love to take that bad boy home for test drive! But with that said, it will be nice to have the extra space in order to push the home office to new dimensions.

But there is one addition that still needs to happen - I think I need to get something like this. Not really wanting to add one more thing to my existing main desk, but with my constantly working from this position, it might be healthier in the long run.

What do you think? Is all of this extra desk space and ergonomic stuff just adding to the problem of staying productive? Or instead, is it possible with the right items, wisely positioned, that a person could indeed, see an increased level of productivity?

These things are horrible to use with a wired mouse: the weight of the cable pulls them off the back all the time. I hate wrist-rests, but if you need one, then you have no chance with one of these.

As for your question of ergonomics vs. productivity: How productive do you think you will be when your wrists hurt so much from bending them the wrong way for endless hours that you can’t stand to use a mouse or keyboard for more than a few minutes at a time? How productive will you be when your lower back and all the way down the backs of your legs are in intense pain from sitting improperly for too long?

You’re a young guy and apparently still fairly healthy. Give it another 10 or 20 years and see how you feel then. I wish I had known the importance of proper ergonomics back when I was in college and when I first started working with computers. Several years ago, I found myself at a point where I could barely work at all any more. I couldn’t sit for more than 10 minutes or so at a time before the pain got so intense I couldn’t concentrate on work. My right wrist was so sore from using an improperly positioned keyboard and mouse that I could only work if I was wearing a big, bulky wrist brace. Fortunately, I “woke up” and realized what I was doing to myself. After several years of making a constant effort to take care of myself ergonomically, I’ve reached a point where I can be quite productive working at a computer again. However, I could have avoided a lot of trouble had I known what I was doing when I was in my 20s and 30s.

Of course you could always go and get the ultimate. They have been around for quite some time apparently.
