Overclocking My Cingular 8125

  • No Related Post

Time for an upgrade, or is it? My old Cingular 8125 is just not as snappy as I once remember it to be. So I have been giving a lot of thought to upgrading to the Cingular 8525. Then came the realization that the only thing I am getting different here is the ’speed’ of the phone itself. In short, from 200Mhz to roughly 400Mhz.

Surely there is a better way to do this and save myself the upgrade cost, new accessories and of course, another extended life battery? After a bit of browsing around, I located something called XCPUScalar. It’s software for Windows Mobile 5 that allows me to do exactly what I need - make my phone faster under a heavy load.

One thing I am very much aware of is potential harm to the phone and of course, locking up the phone completely. Still, you have to admit, the idea of overclocking a PocketPC does hold a certain charm.

Given the limited cooling potential in a phone, I’d be verrrrry careful. Of course, you are thinking of replacing it… ;)

I’ve been using XCPUScalar with my Treo (700wx) for 6 months now. It has customizable settings so you can vary the processor speed based on load, similar to laptops power saving functions. My Treo is set to idle at 208Mhz and maxes out under full load at 512Mhz. Because it isn’t alway running full out, I’ve had no issues with lock-ups or overheating. Of course, your mileage may vary!

Been running BatteryStatus on my Cingular 8125 with various ROM builds for months now. No major issues, but don’t overclock to an insane degree and consider taking advantage of the Underclocking as well when the device isn’t heavily used - most recommendations are ~ 150 for underclocking and no higher than 250 or so for overclocking.

As for the 8525, you would also gain 3G - useful if you’re doing data, but perhaps not so much otherwise.

In any case, whether you’re just looking for general advice or something more about your HTC re-branded device, xda-developers.com is your friend - LOTS of good information there about how to get the most from your Wizard (8125)
