Is Comcast Out To Mess With BitTorrent users?

In all honesty, I really do not use BitTorrent for anything short of Linux distro downloads and select video content from podcasting sources. Yet reading stories like this, be it something I have not been able to verify to my own satisfaction, leave a mixed taste in my mouth.

I am a paying Comcast customer. For the most part, I am fairly happy with that choice as it is indeed, a choice. See, even when we live in an area where alternative broadband services are not available, the fact remains that if we do not like something they provide, we are under no obligation to continue using their Internet access. Because these ‘up to’ speed claims that the company has been making is quickly going to turn into hogwash as the frequency spectrum’s harsh realities begin to rear their ugly head.

On the other side of that point, if they are not openly disclosing that your speeds are an ‘up to’ kind of thing, then that is basically the only thing you can really hold against them. Because at the end of the day, no matter how silly their terms of service may seem, it clearly states that they can kick your backside to the curb anytime it tickles their fancy – pure and simple.

Personally, I think that the way they throttling bandwidth on law abiding BitTorrent users is terrible, but certainly not enough to go through the hassle of switching providers. Like small stores, restaurants and even bars, Comcast has the right to refuse service to anyone, despite our feelings as to why they might to choose to do so.
