Help, I Am Stuck With My Cell Phone!

I hate to say it, but I am stuck with my current Pocket PC. Not because I am not eligible for an upgrade mind you, rather because the existing options do nothing for me! Am I alone here? Is it simply myself that has found out that most new phones are not going to provide me with both the functionality and overall feel that I have with my Cingular 8125? The Blackjack is terrible, so what else is out there for us?

Hit the comments, tell me about what you are using and why it’s worth upgrading to it. No iPhones please; I need business functionality, not a ‘cool looking phone.’ No real keyboard, not interested.

Not being familiar with that model [it’s been a couple of years since I sold phones] I looked it up.

Why change if it works for you? I don’t worry about the latest features, and if I could get one, would go back to a plain LCD screen Motorola StarTac 7787. I never had a better phone. And that is all I use it for, calling.

If you can live with Cingular service, you may as well keep it. If you live and work where Sprint doesn’t suck, they have some decent and comparable phones. My choice would always be a Verizon phone, because, for me, it’s about the service, and no one has better. [People complain about the billing, and customer service, but no one complains about coverage, and I am still not sure who Cingular paid off to be able to use the ‘lowest number of dropped calls stuff’ - in southern, central, and northern California, Verizon beats Cingular hands down. In Texas, and some other parts of the midwest, Sprint does come close, with Cingular./ ATT a distant third.] TMobile has, hands down the best customer service and billing, and when the coverage gets a bit better I plan to change. If TMobile would do it for you, coverage-wise, they offer a couple of nice phones - or you could get another GSM phone unlocked for use with TMobile.

Yeah, I believe your best bet right now would be your phone. The blackjack sucks!

Have you considered Nokia e-series? They are the business-minded nokia phones, running Symbian OS, which means you can add a lot of extra features through applications.

The 8525 from AT&T would be a choice. I am getting ready to make that switch myself. The 8525 is practically the same device a little slimmer and little faster. The biggest difference is the 3G capability (if in your area) unfortunately in my area it isn’t available yet. It has some new features, and software pre-installed on it.

When someone asks me about what kind of PC to get, I always answer the same way. “It depends.”
It depends on what you want to do with it. Are there particular applications you must have? Is there a particular OS you feel comfortable with.
These same questions seem to apply to your request, Matt. You need to give your audience, to whom you are seeking advice, much more information.

Having said that, have you looked at the Palm Treos?

I just got into the Palm Treo 700wx at Verizon… My son has the earlier edition of the Palm, and has had pda phones for over two years now, but he has the same problem… Even though he subscribes to the ‘New Every Two’ plan, he can’t justify the upgrade cost to the wx just to gain another 32 MB of system memory… So he has no where to go, either.

But let’s face it - these are the ‘high end’ of phones we’re talking about (yours at Cingular/AT&T, the Palm at Verizon). The number of subscribers, I would imagine, are relatively low at this price point, so there is no impetus for manufacturers to invest in product development. The Palm, one would think, would be a mature product, but it does things I wouldn’t normally tolerate (essentially software or firmware ‘glitches’); but I have no alternative either.
